Elizabeth Francis was born in Co. Donegal, Ireland. She studied architecture at University College Dublin and graduated with honours in 1993. She has studied and worked in Italy, France, Ireland and the UK. Her company atelier Francis cultivates cultural links internationally, curating events and exhibitions in the field of art, architecture and design.
She was Commissioner for Ireland’s Representation at the 13th International Architecture Exhibition – la Biennale di Venezia 2012 and its subsequent national tour in Ireland.
In Ravenna, Italy she co-founded Meme Exchange, a non-profit cultural association that promotes sustainable urban regeneration and the recovery of disused spaces.
For 16 years from 1994 she was partner in Mario Cucinella Architects (MCA) in Paris and Bologna, a practice at the forefront of contemporary design and research. Elizabeth has a particular interest in architectural research and has taught Ecological Design Studio in the faculty of Architecture, University College Dublin. She has developed a number of European Commission funded projects in the field of renewable energies, exploring the application of natural cooling techniques in buildings. From 2007 to 2010 she brought this work to an international audience with symposia and exhibitions as part of the PHDC dissemination project.
She has spoken on her work at international conferences in Europe, Asia, Africa and the USA.
She was International Coordinator Italy for Irish Design 2015, an initiative exploring, promoting and celebrating Irish design and designers.
Elizabeth has been a board member of the International Women’s Forum of Bologna since 2010 and was elected President for the social year 2014-2015.
She is a member of the Global Irish Network since 2015.
